Good ol' chocolate, our perfect treat-yourself delicacy that we just can't stay away from. We've been so familiar with chocolate that has no health benefits for so long, what about the good stuff?

You read that correctly, chocolate can actually be good for you.

Now before we get too far ahead, let's break down where chocolate actually comes from. The cacao, or cocoa tree, found mostly in South America, western Africa, and parts of southern Asia, produces beans that contain cacoa seeds. These seeds are roasted to result in the base of what we see in the store. Cacao contains antioxidants known as flavanoids, which can help prevent heart disease and cancer. These flavanoids are diminished the more the cacao is processed, and milk negates the antioxidants in cacao. So, although it might be more bitter than milk chocolate, dark chocolate is the way to go.

When finding good chocolate, look for chocolate that's 70 percent cacao. This is the balance of having enough health benefits without it being too bitter to enjoy. 1-2oz. of dark chocolate per day can have great health benefits. Avoid chocolates that contain oils and other additives like high fructose corn syrup, as these will limit the health benefit of the cacao.

Finally, a reason to eat chocolate everyday.
