Michigan Cherry-Molasses BBQ Ribs

  • 2 racks of pork or beef ribs (1lb. each)
  • 1 Onion, chopped
  • 1/4 cup liquid smoke
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1/2 cup fresh Michigan cherry preseves
  • 2 tbsp. molasses
  • 2 tbsp. brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tbsp. chili paste
  • 1 tbsp. soy sauce
  • 1 tsp. lemon zest
  • 1 tsp. liquid smoke
  • 1 tsp. onion powder

  1. In a medium sauce pot, bring all BBQ sauce ingredients to a simmer for 10 minutes.
  2. Dress the ribs ahead of time with half of the sauce. Allow to marinate overnight. Use the remaining sauce to coat the ribs on the grill.
  3. For ribs, preheat oven to 400 degrees. In an oven pan, cover the ribs with water half way; add the chopped onion and liquid smoke.
  4. Cover with foil and bake in the oven for 1 hour. Check the tenderness of the ribs.
  5. You should be able to puncture the meat with a fork. If you need to add water to the pan and continue baking, do so. Finish the ribs on the grill, dressing them with the remainder of the sauce.
